AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and Senate Finance Chairman Tommy Williams will lay out their state budget draft today. The bill will signal Republican spending priorities for the next two years. Dewhurst has promised a conservative budget. Democrats want to restore more than $5 billion in cuts to public schools.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Texas House will set rules for its 2013 session as lawmakers return to work today. Tea party conservatives are seeking greater transparency in what happens to bills they file, to what committees they are assigned and whether they come up for a vote.

TYLER, Texas (AP) The trial of a retired dentist accused of killing his wife is beginning today in Tyler. Bobby Nichols has acknowledged shooting his wife Rosalind at their home last year but says he doesn't remember details of that night. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

JACKSONVILLE, Texas (AP) The campus of the oldest junior college in Texas will be auctioned off this morning in Dallas. The auction of the 112-acre Lon Morris College campus in Jacksonville will include most of the school's facilities, including the library, chapel, administration building, classroom facilities and athletic fields. Lon Morris filed for bankruptcy in June.
