AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A freshman backup quarterback at the University of Texas has been arrested in Austin for public intoxication and carrying a fake driver's license. Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman Roger Wade says 19-year-old Connor Brewer was arrested by school police early yesterday. Wade says court documents indicate Brewer was booked into the county jail, appeared before a justice of the peace court and released about 11 hours later.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Governor Rick Perry says he hopes the Boy Scouts of America doesn't move soften its mandatory no-gays membership policy. The Republican addressed an annual gathering of Scouts from around Texas yesterday. Asked about the policy afterward, he said "I think most people see absolutely no reason to change" it.

DALLAS (AP) A federal judge in Dallas has told a suburb that had targeted illegal immigrants through city ordinances to move ahead with new single-member city council districts that could elect the city's first Hispanic council member. The Dallas Morning News reports that U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater's move followed his earlier ruling that Farmers Branch had violated the Voting Rights Act.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) The El Paso district attorney has asked a judge to consider the legitimacy of Socorro's city council after the state declared council members had violated the law by extending their terms. District Attorney Jaime Esparza filed a petition with the court Friday asking a judge to consider under what authority the city council members hold office.
