TYLER, Texas (AP) Police say one man is dead and his alleged killer charged in the slaying after an argument in a Tyler mall spilled into the parking lot. A Tyler police spokesman said 23-year-old Chris Mass of Tyler died yesterday morning outside the Broadway Square Mall. A 25-year-old from Henderson, Ricky Neal Junior was arrested at the scene and has been charged with first-degree murder.
TYLER, Texas (AP) The teenager accused of stabbing an East Texas high teacher to death in 2009 has been committed to a state hospital for one more year. The Tyler Morning Telegraph reports that the commitment hearing in district court took place Friday morning. Judge Christi Kennedy found the teen, now 19, mentally incompetent to stand trial and ordered another year of commitment at Vernon State Hospital.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) The Texas Tech University System has reached the $1 billion fundraising mark in a campaign that began two years ago. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that university Chancellor Kent Hance celebrated the mark along with school officials and others Friday, saying the goal was reached a year ahead of schedule and during a recession.
JACKSONVILLE, Texas (AP) An East Texas school district has agreed to pay $1.53 million for the gymnasium, administration building and other assets of bankrupt Lon Morris College. Superintendent Joe Wardell of the Jacksonville school district says that the assets, which include more than 50 acres of land, have a value of about $6.8 million.
