JACINTO CITY, Texas (AP) A teenager accused of wounding two Houston-area police officers has been captured. Officers shot and wounded 17-year-old Edgar Cuellar earlier today at a home in Jacinto City. Authorities say the officers were shot yesterday while attempting to speak to Cuellar in an investigation stemming from an incident earlier this week.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Texas Senate Education Committee is expected to discuss several bills including a proposal to lift the cap on the number of licenses issued to operate charter schools statewide. Committee chairman Dan Patrick wants to do away with the current maximum of 215 charter school licenses allowed. The Republican senator is also pushing for a special charter school governing board.
HEREFORD, Texas (AP) Funerals services are scheduled in Hereford for a high school athlete who died nine days after a flying discus hit him in the hip. The funeral for Joshua Ramirez is this afternoon at the Church of God of the First Born. The 15-year-old freshman died at an area hospital on Sunday, more than a week after the discus hit him.
GATESVILLE, Texas (AP) Authorities in Texas and other states are starting to re-examine old arson cases in which defendants may have been convicted with questionable scientific evidence. Experts convened by the Texas fire marshal's office will soon begin examining six cases that might contain flaws. They include the case of a man convicted in 1988 of killing his two stepsons by locking them in a shed and setting it ablaze.
