AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Governor Rick Perry has drawn his first major primary opponent in the 2014 gubernatorial campaign. Former state Republican Party chairman Tom Pauken appointed a campaign treasurer today. That allows a candidate to raise and spend campaign funds. Pauken is an Army Vietnam veteran who previously served as Chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission.

DALLAS (AP) A special prosecutor will investigate a possible contempt of court violation by the Dallas County district attorney. Cooke County prosecutor Ron Poole was appointed today to handle the contempt proceedings involving Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins. State District Judge Bob Brotherton of Wichita Falls made the appointment yesterday.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) Analysts say a bandanna used in DNA testing that freed a Texas man from prison after 25 years carried DNA of the man's murdered wife and a drifter now on trial for her slaying in 1986. DNA analysts testifying in San Angelo at the trial of Mark Norwood said today most of the scrapings found on victim Christine Morton's blue bandanna belonged to Norwood. DNA testing wasn't available in 1986. The testing wasn't conducted until Michael Morton's attorneys spent years lobbying for it.

DALLAS (AP) A federal grand jury in Dallas has re-indicted former NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd, who already is accused of trying to establish a drug-distribution network. The new indictment charges the ex-Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys receiver with conspiracy to possess 5 kilograms or more of cocaine with intent to distribute. The 27-year-old Hurd remains at a Dallas-area prison without bond.
