BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) A Mexican man who allegedly impersonated a Texas police officer has pleaded guilty to a weapons charge. Jose Rodriguez-Treto pleaded guilty yesterday to being an illegal immigrant in possession of a firearm. He faces up to 10 years in prison when he's sentenced in June.
SOCORRO, Texas (AP) Another West Texas school district has launched an audit to determine whether any employees cheated on federal student accountability standards. Socorro Independent School District trustees yesterday approved a review to determine if staffers tried to manipulate student transfer credits. Superintendent Joe Espinoza says the district hasn't received allegations of wrongdoing, but is being proactive.
SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) A murder trial linked to the wrongful conviction of a Central Texas man is nearing its conclusion. Closing arguments are expected today in the trial of Mark Alan Norwood, who is charged in the 1986 slaying of Christine Morton. Her husband, Michael Morton, spent nearly 25 years in prison for her death before DNA evidence exonerated him.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A New Mexico man accused of stealing firearms from licensed dealers in New Mexico and Texas has reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Twenty-one-year-old Emilio Sandoval entered his guilty plea yesterday. Prosecutors say the thefts from dealers in El Paso and Las Cruces, N.M., happened over a six-month period last year.
