NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) Country music star George Jones had his roots in Texas. He was born near the town of Saratoga and started out singing in church and performing for tips on the streets of Beaumont. Jones went on to have number one songs in five separate decades from the 1950s to the 1990s. He has died in Tennessee at age 81.
PLAINVIEW, Texas (AP) Wayland Baptist University in Plainview has fired its chief financial officer. An affidavit says James Smith has admitted stealing about $40,000 from the West Texas school over a four-year period to pay off personal debts. He was suspended last month.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) Another person convicted in the training instructor scandal at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland has been sentenced. Staff Sergeant Robert Hudson pleaded guilty after being accused of using bleach to abuse recruits and having sex with a recruit. Hudson has been sentenced to five months in jail and has been kicked out of the service.
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) Defense lawyers in the trial of a man charged with a fatal shooting outside the courthouse in downtown Beaumont say they need more time to prepare their case. A judge agreed today to resume Bartholomew Granger's trial on Monday. Prosecutors say Granger killed a woman bystander while he was shooting and wounding his daughter and her mother.
