EDEN, Texas (AP) Authorities say a man suspected in a West Texas shooting rampage that left one woman dead and five others wounded was stationed at a Marine base in North Carolina. The Texas Department of Public Safety says 23-year-old Esteban Smith later died in a gunfight with an agency trooper and a state game warden. Six people were shot, one fatally, in the rampage on Sunday. Among the wounded is Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) Warm weather is helping the San Antonio area dry out after thunderstorms over the weekend flooded roads and waterways, killing three people. The National Weather Service yesterday discontinued a flood watch for the region. The San Antonio Water System reported two sewer lines were overwhelmed by the flooding, causing spills of more than 100,000 gallons.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Texas Senate has officially started the special legislative session called by Governor Rick Perry. The Legislature adjourned its regular 140-day session yesterday, and lawmakers were almost immediately ordered by Perry to continue working for another 30 days to address redistricting. The House is expected to meet today.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas lawmakers have awarded the Legislative Medal of Honor to a Cameron man killed in Afghanistan. The state Legislature handed out the award to Darryn Deen Andrews yesterday. According to the Army, Andrews died while protecting three of his men after his unit was ambushed in September 2009.
