FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) The Pentagon says a 29-year-old soldier from suburban Houston has died in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Joe Nunez-Rodriguez was killed after his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Wardak province. He was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
CORSICANA, Texas (AP) Two police officers have fatally shot a 21-year-old man who had been threatening suicide before firing on the officers about an hour south of Dallas. Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said yesterday that his officers responded to a call at the Cottonwood Trailer Park early Saturday about a man firing into the air and threatening to kill himself.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Officials are investigating what appeared to be an acid bomb that forced the evacuation of an Austin middle school and forced eight people to seek treatment for inhaling chemical vapors. A security guard at Burnet Middle School discovered what officials described as an unfinished acid bomb inside a boys' bathroom Friday morning.
NEW BOSTON, Texas (AP) A law enforcement official says a Texas home has been searched and a resident interviewed as part of the investigation into ricin-tainted letters sent to New York City's mayor and President Barack Obama. Authorities blocked off the house in New Boston for hours Friday and set up tents in the yard while searching for evidence. The location is near the Oklahoma and Arkansas state lines.
