HOUSTON (AP) An ex-Houston police officer has told jurors he used force against a black teenage burglary suspect only because he thought the teen might have a gun. Drew Ryser testified in his trial yesterday that he didn't abuse, assault or mistreat the suspect. Security video from the March 2010 arrest appears to show several officers hitting then-15-year-old Chad Holley.
HOUSTON (AP) A suspect in a Houston-area college campus shooting is back in custody after he failed to appear at a scheduled court appearance. Authorities say Trey Foster turned himself in yesterday at the Harris County Jail in Houston. Foster is charged in the January shooting at a Lone Star College campus near downtown Houston.
WEST, Texas (AP) Nearly 800 people have sought Federal Emergency Management Agency help since a deadly fertilizer plant explosion in Central Texas. FEMA says the agency, the state and the Small Business Administration have approved more than $6.5 million in grants and loans since the April 17th blast in West that killed 15 people. Officials say about 200 homes in the town were damaged or destroyed.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A federal report blames a woman's death last year in a Texas state mental hospital on unnecessary restraints and poor medical care. The U.S. Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services found that Ann Simmons died in Terrell State Hospital in February 2012 of a pulmonary embolism. The 62-year-old woman developed the embolism after she was held in restraints for 55 hours.
