LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) A 14-year-old West Texas boy is dead after he impaled himself on the horns of a bull statue on the Texas Tech University campus. School spokesman Chris Cook says Miguel Martinez impaled himself while playing hide-and-seek with friends early Saturday morning. Police say Martinez was running on the National Ranching Heritage Museum when the horn pierced his chest.

WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. Supreme Court has sent a Texas case on race-based college admissions back to a lower court for another look. The court issued the decision yesterday. Writing for the court, Justice Anthony Kennedy said a federal appeals court needs to subject the University of Texas admission plan to the highest level of judicial scrutiny.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) State Senate Democrats have delayed a vote on a bill with major new restrictions on abortion. Senate rules allowed minority Democrats to block Republican efforts to bring the bill up for a vote before this morning. The special legislative session ends at midnight.

HOUSTON (AP) Texas' highest criminal court has denied a request to block a Dallas County woman's execution this week. Kimberly McCarthy contended that black jurors were improperly excluded from her trial by Dallas County prosecutors. McCarthy's execution tomorrow would be the 500th in Texas since the state resume carrying out the death penalty in 1982.
