EL PASO, Texas (AP) A West Texas county has modified its employee health plan, changing the policy language to remove references to gay couples and domestic partners in order to make it "legally defensible." The new language talks about a "plus one" program, set to begin next year, in which employees can include another adult in the plan, as long as certain requirements are met. El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar says the change was made to avoid lawsuits.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) Authorities have restricted air and nautical traffic around the site of a natural gas well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. Forty-seven workers on a drilling rig were evacuated after the well, 55 miles off the Louisiana coast, blew wild this morning. No injuries were reported and there was no fire as of this afternoon. It remained unclear how or when the well would be shut down.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) A county coroner said today that the passenger killed while riding a Texas roller coaster was ejected from her seat and plummeted about 75 feet before striking a metal beam. Fifty-two-year-old Rosa Irene Ayala-Gaona was found dead Friday at the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park. The official cause of death remains pending. An autopsy shows she suffered multiple traumatic injuries and extensive trauma to her torso.
SAGINAW, Texas (AP) A police officer and another person have been shot at a home in Saginaw where police investigating the killing of a six-year-old girl were serving a search warrant. The shooting started as officers were trying to search a home on the block where Alanna Gallagher lived. Her body was found wrapped in a tarp more than three weeks ago.
