AMARILLO, Texas (AP) A federal aviation spokesman says the pilot of a small plane was killed after it crashed in a Texas Panhandle neighborhood. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says in an email that the pilot reported engine problems today and was attempting to return to Tradewind Airport when the Piper PA-30 crashed in the yard of a mobile home.

SOCORRO, Texas (AP) Multiple charges against two former West Texas officers have been dismissed by a judge who determined the case against them lacked sufficient evidence. The El Paso Times reports today that state District Judge Gonzalo Garcia threw out charges against Jose Alvarez and Javier Varela. They had been accused of official oppression and other charges.

HOUSTON (AP) The former nonprofit operating out of the purple-trimmed, one-story brick home in north Houston apparently started with the best of intentions: to feed and shelter homeless individuals. But Regina's Faith Ministries soon ran afoul of its philanthropic goals as it lost its nonprofit status and violated state licensing regulations. Authorities allege the group ended up turning its shelter into a dungeon-like prison where three men say they were held against their wills so their captor could cash their public assistance checks.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas wide receiver Cayleb Jones has been released five months after he was accused of punching a Longhorns tennis player and breaking his jaw. Coach Mack Brown said last night Jones has been given an unconditional release.
