PHOENIX (AP) Requests for asylum in the United States along the Mexican border have more than doubled over the last three years as immigrants seek legal entry into the country by claiming fear of persecution back home. That's according to figures released by the federal government yesterday.
DALLAS (AP) Canadian actor August Schellenberg, who starred in the "Free Willy" films, has died at his Dallas home after a fight with lung cancer. He was 77. The actor's agent, Jamie Levitt, says Schellenberg died Thursday surrounded by his family.
NEW YORK (AP) A New York City real estate heir who admitted killing his neighbor in Texas a decade ago has had another run-in with the law. Police say Robert Durst was arrested yesterday outside his Harlem home on a trespassing violation. They say the 70-year-old son of real estate mogul Seymour Durst showed up at his brother's midtown Manhattan home in June after being told to stay away. In 2001, Durst was arrested as a fugitive and admitted killing his neighbor in Texas and dumping the remains into Galveston Bay. He claimed self-defense and was acquitted of homicide charges.
BRENHAM, Texas (AP) A 65-year-old Central Texas man has been sentenced to 725 years in prison for sex crimes against two young children. A Washington County jury in Brenham sentenced Benny Walker on Wednesday to three 75-year prison terms for each of three sexual assault counts.
