BRENHAM, Texas (AP) It's a 725-year prison term for a 65-year-old Central Texas man convicted of sex crimes against two young children. A Washington County jury in Brenham sentenced Benny Joseph Walker on Wednesday to three 75-year prison terms for each of three sexual assault counts. He was also sentenced on child pornography charges.
PHOENIX (AP) The federal government says requests for asylum are way up along the Southwest border. The requests have more than doubled over the last three years as immigrants seek legal entry into the country by claiming fear of persecution back home. The number of so-called credible fear claims reached nearly 15,000 by the end of June.
NEW YORK (AP) Robert Durst, the 70-year-old son of real estate mogul Seymour Durst, has been arrested outside his Harlem home on a trespassing violation. Police say Robert Durst showed up at his brother's home in June after being told to stay away. Robert Durst admitted killing his neighbor in Texas a decade ago. He claimed self-defense and was acquitted.
HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) Former major league outfielder Chad Curtis could face up to 15 years in prison after being found guilty on charges that he inappropriately touched teenage girls. The 44-year-old Curtis was convicted of six counts of criminal sexual conduct. Prosecutors say he touched girls between the ages of 13 and 16 last year when he was a volunteer weight-room strength trainer at an area high school.
