FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) Relatives of those killed and survivors of the Fort Hood shooting rampage have mixed feelings about the death sentence a military jury handed down. The panel today sentenced Major Nidal Hasan to death. He was convicted of killing 13 people in 2009 and wounding dozens of others.
HOUSTON (AP) Texas A and M quarterback Johnny Manziel has been suspended for the first half of the Aggies' season-opener against Rice this Saturday for what the school said was an "inadvertent" violation of NCAA rules by signing autographs. The school issued a statement today saying it declared the Heisman Trophy winner ineligible and that the NCAA agreed to reinstate Manziel after he serves the half-game suspension.
NORMANGEE, Texas (AP) Federal authorities say they've arrested a Texas police chief for assisting a woman suspected of trafficking in methamphetamine. Prosecutors announced today that Normangee police Chief Joseph Ray Navarro was arrested on a count of intentionally exceeding authorized access to a protected computer. The 40-year-old is in federal custody and has a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday. Normangee is about 35 miles northeast of College Station.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) ConocoPhillips Company made $50.3 million in high bids, including the day's highest single bid of $30.5 million, in the second-smallest federal oil lease sale for tracts off the Texas coast since area-wide sales began in 1983. Twelve companies submitted $102.4 million in high bids on 53 blocks. Houston-based ConocoPhillips bid on 31.
