FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) Major Nidal Hasan (nih-DAHL' hah-SAHN') may welcome a death sentence as a pathway to martyrdom. But the rules of military justice won't let him go down without a fight. Hasan faces years, if not decades, of appeals. He won't be able to represent himself. Appointed attorneys will handle the case on his behalf.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Texas Transportation Commission is to hear testimony about a proposal to shift the burden for maintaining highways to local governments. The Texas Department of Transportation wants cities and counties to repair nearly 1,900 miles of urban highways. It also wants to convert 83 miles of state highways in some oil-field areas from asphalt to gravel.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) A North Texas jury deliberated just 40 minutes before finding a drifter guilty of capital murder in the 2006 rape and killing of a Fort Worth woman. John Hoffman will serve a life sentence without parole in the suffocation death of Laurie Chavers. Prosecutors weren't seeking the death penalty.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) The Fort Worth Transportation Authority says riders today can donate a can or box of food and hop on buses for free. It's the latest effort by The T (tee) to support the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The deal applies to any of The T's regular or express buses in Fort Worth or Richland Hills.
