EL PASO, Texas (AP) Parts of West Texas are cleaning up from flooding that washed out roads and inundated homes as forecasters keep a wary eye on Hurricane Ingrid as it moves toward South Texas. National Weather Service meteorologist David Hefner said yesterday that El Paso and surrounding communities received more than 3 inches of rain over four days.
VICTORIA, Texas (AP) A fire at plant in Southeast Texas that produces plastics has injured five workers. The Victoria Advocate reports the fire Friday began in a tower at Formosa Plastics about 30 miles southeast of Victoria. Four of the workers were taken to a burn unit at a Houston hospital and the fifth to a hospital in Victoria.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) The Department of Defense has announced that a soldier stationed in Texas has died from wounds suffered in a noncombat incident in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Robert Thomas Junior of Fontana, California died Friday at Brooke Army Medical center outside San Antonio.
HOUSTON (AP) Celebrity cook Paula Deen fought back tears as she was greeted by a supportive crowd during an appearance at a Houston cooking show. Saturday's event was Deen's first public appearance since June when it was revealed that in an earlier legal deposition she acknowledged using racial slurs in the past. Within a few days the Food Network yanked her show off the air, and retailers such as Wal-Mart removed her products from shelves.
