EL PASO, Texas (AP) Tropical storm Ingrid is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before it makes landfall in eastern Mexico tomorrow, bringing more rain to Texas.Parts of West Texas are still cleaning up after heavy rains caused flooding in El Paso last week. Floods from the same storm system caused thousands to evacuate their homes in Colorado this weekend.
VICTORIA, Texas (AP) The Occupation Safety and Health Administration is investigating after a fire at plant in a Southeast Texas plastics plant injured five workers. The Advocate reports the fire Friday began in a tower at Formosa Plastics about 30 miles southeast of Victoria.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A spike in the number of Texas children dying in foster care has prompted state officials to demand a tougher screening process for foster parents. Ten foster children died under suspicious circumstances in the fiscal year that ended August 31st. Patrick Crimmins with the state Department of Family and Protective Services tells The Dallas Morning News that four of the deaths have been ruled the result of abuse and neglect.
HOUSTON (AP) It may look like a fish and move like one, but the innovative BIOSwimmer could prove far more useful in the fight against drug-runners and even terrorists. The 90-pound, 5-foot-long swimming robot is the result of a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a Massachusetts technology firm. The Chronicle reports it will be on display later this year in the Port of Houston.
