AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Central Texas welcomed a day of steady, sometimes heavy rain. But a meteorologist says it will take more than that to break a long and persistent drought that has parched the region and largely dried up its lakes. Camp Mabry in Austin reported 2.61 inches of rain on Friday while Burnet, upstream on the Colorado River, reported 2.07 inches.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas Republicans running for the top statewide offices unanimously oppose expanding protections based on sexual orientation. An Associated Press survey shows that GOP candidates support the state's gay marriage ban and most say local ordinances that prohibit gay discrimination violate other people's freedom of religion. Some candidates also say gays, lesbians and the transgendered don't face significant discrimination. The AP sent six questions to the Republican candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) State Representative Tryon Lewis says he won't seek re-election to the House District 81 seat representing a large chunk of West Texas. The three-term Odessa Republican chairs the House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence and sits on the House Committee on Environmental Regulation.
HOCHATOWN, Okla. (AP) The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a Texas man has been killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident near Hochatown in southeastern Oklahoma. A report on the crash says 26-year-old Jay Lee of Lubbock died in the accident Friday night in McCurtain County.
