AUSTIN, Texas (AP) While Democrat Wendy Davis waits to announce her run for Texas governor, Republican candidate Tom Pauken is telling voters he's the best choice to challenge her in a general election. Pauken is running a long-shot bid gubernatorial bid against Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott. The 69-year-old most recently helmed the Texas Workforce Commission and formerly ran the state Republican Party.
BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has visited the heart of Texas to help rally Democrats in a Republican-leaning state. Patrick was in Dallas yesterday to deliver the keynote address at the Texas Democratic Party's Barbara Jordan Legacy Dinner. He's set to return to Massachusetts later today.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The state has stopped placing abused and neglected children with a foster-care contractor after finding problems at the company's nearly 400 homes. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services said Friday that a sweep of homes run by Texas Mentor disclosed instances of substandard care. The Dallas Morning News reports Commissioner John Specia has halted further placements.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Two women whose husbands were killed in a boiler explosion at a crude oil refinery in Wynnewood have filed a negligence lawsuit. The lawsuit filed in Fort Bend County, Texas by LeeAnna Mann and Kari Smith seeks more than $1 million. It was filed in the Texas county that's headquarters to CVR Energy, the parent company of Wynnewood Refining Company.
