(AP) Texas Senator Ted Cruz told a socially conservative advocacy group yesterday that President Barack Obama's Democratic administration is "the most hostile to religious liberty" in American history. Several hundred Christian conservatives roared their approval as Cruz delivered a 54-minute speech to the Virginia Family Foundation gala in Richmond.
HOUSTON (AP) Texas leads the nation in the number of people seeking federal permission to buy guns. Federal statistics reviewed by the Houston Chronicle show 1.2 million people in Texas so far this year have filled out applications for background checks. At that rate, last year's record 1.4 million requests will be surpassed by the end of 2013.
JASPER, Texas (AP) A suburban Houston law enforcement administrator is the new chief of the lawsuit-mired police department in Jasper in East Texas. The Beaumont Enterprise reports the city council voted Friday to hire Aaron Tyksinski, who's chief deputy of the Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Constable's office.
IRVING, Texas (AP) The Big 12 Conference has publicly reprimanded Iowa State coach Paul Rhodes and Texas receiver Mike Davis. The conference reprimanded the two on Saturday following Texas' 31-30 win at Iowa State two days earlier. Davis' reprimand came after he illegally hit Iowa State defensive back Mike Broomfield in the knees on a third-quarter play. Davis was penalized for a personal foul. Coach Davis was reprimanded by the Big 12 for complaining about a controversial call that gave Texas possession after a fumble.
