But if things ever really got dicey, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson says his first move would actually be for the .380 he keeps in his waistband. In an interview with The Associated Press this week, the candidate for lieutenant governor showed off his pistols.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance has announced that he will resign as leader of a system that's grown to enroll more than 44,000 students. The board of regents voted today to accept the resignation of the 70-year-old Hance. In 2006 he became the third chancellor of the system, which includes the flagship Texas Tech campus in Lubbock, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Angelo State University and satellite system offices.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) A West Texas man has been indicted over the shooting deaths of his estranged wife and her brother in an attack that left his sister-in-law wounded. The San Angelo Standard-Times reports Brian Berry's mother faces allegations of helping him flee after the July 28th shootings at his wife's home in Wall.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) People wanting to share photos of the lingering Texas drought have more time to post their original pictures online. The Texas Water Development Board today announced the original September 30th deadline to offer photos has been extended to October 31st.
