AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The weekend death of an 11-month-old foster child near Austin is the fifth in Texas in the handful of weeks since the end of a troubled fiscal year for the state's foster care system. The latest happened Sunday in Cedar Park, where 32-year-old Jacob Salas was charged him with injury to a child.
HOUSTON (AP) Two Army National Guard soldiers in Texas have pleaded guilty to wrongly obtaining nearly $30,000 in recruiting bonuses. Federal prosecutors say Annika Chambers of Houston today pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bribery. Elisha Ceja of Barboursville, W.V., previously pleaded guilty to the same counts. Both face up to 15 years in prison.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A Texas House panel investigating University of Texas System Regent Wallace Hall heard its first round of testimony today in an investigation that could lead to the first impeachment of a nonelected official in state history. Some state lawmakers have accused Hall of misusing the authority of his office in an effort to force out UT Austin President Bill Powers. The committee meets again tomorrow.
