AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Witnesses say a gun-rights rally outside the Texas Capitol was interrupted when state troopers handcuffed two pistol-wearing demonstrators and took them into custody. Organizers of yesterday's small demonstration were also part of last week's rally at the Alamo where hundreds of gun-rights advocates brought rifles and shotguns. It was unclear what, if any, charges the men taken away faced last night.
HIGH ISLAND, Texas (AP) Firefighters have contained a grass fire that spread over about 5,000 acres of a federal wildlife refuge marshland along the upper Texas Gulf Coast. Denise Ruffino at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's McFaddin Wildlife Refuge said she expected only a few smoldering spots remained yesterday about 45 miles from Houston.
HOUSTON (AP) A suburban Houston police officer is hospitalized in stable condition after she was shot by a passenger in a vehicle. Authorities say Stafford Officer Ann Carrizales was attempting to question three men in an idling car about 3:30 a.m. yesterday when she was shot in the face and chest.
WHARTON, Texas (AP) Wharton High School cheerleaders thought including condoms in a "spirit bag" given to football players before their homecoming game last week was funny. Officials in the district about 60 miles southwest of Houston weren't amused. Houston television station KHOU reports the cheerleaders received a one-day, in-school suspension and weren't allowed at Friday night's game. Without the cheerleaders, Wharton lost Friday night.
