AMARILLO, Texas (AP) A 45-mile north-south route in the Texas Panhandle has been closed due to about 20 traffic accidents during freezing, snowy conditions. The Texas Department of Public Safety says the accidents that began Saturday morning closed U.S. 287 between Amarillo and Dumas (DOO'-mus). Senior Trooper Chris Ray says the wrecks continued throughout the day and officers closed the highway Saturday afternoon in order to clear the accident scenes.
DALLAS (AP) Hundreds of families lined up on a rainy day in Dallas before the start of the Christmas in The Park Giveaway. Saturday's event at Fair Park helps needy youngsters and their parents with gifts of toys, food, clothing and household items. Some participants waited for the venue to open in tents Saturday morning with chilly temperatures in the 30s.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas (AP) Country Music Hall of Fame member Ray Price has been remembered at a memorial service in his East Texas hometown as a musical innovator and a gentleman. The Daily Tribune reports hundreds of people packed the service yesterday in Mount Pleasant, the town about 110 miles northeast of Dallas where Price had lived for 31 years. A funeral is planned for December 28th in Dallas.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Efforts by one Central Texas city to go green have led to a pay-to-ride bicycle-sharing program. The B-Cycle project in Austin began Saturday with 11 bicycle stations mainly in the downtown area. More than 100 three-speed bicycles are available for rental.
