MCALLEN, Texas (AP) A South Texas sheriff whose territory borders Mexico is in the spotlight as his department is plagued by drug scandals. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino has repeatedly denied being aware of any of the irregularities, including one that involved his son. But Trevino faces re-election in 2016. Nine other lawmen, including Trevino's son, have been convicted on drug charges.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) The city of Lubbock has agreed to pay $80,000 in a settlement with a woman injured when she stepped into a hole on her way out of a Texas Tech football game. The Lubbock City Council approved the settlement last week for Eva Montez. Montez sued the city after she was hurt in Nov. 2010 leaving a Texas Tech game. She alleged that she stepped into a hole left when workers removed a utility pole next to a sidewalk. The hole was estimated at 4 to 5 feet deep.
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) Two suburban Dallas police officers are wounded after shooting broke out during a standoff with a suspect. Grand Prairie police confronted a man yestersday afternoon after an overnight incident in which a person opened fire on a police officer. Police say when officers approached the man, he immediately opened fire and fled toward a field. Two officers suffered superficial wounds.

HOUSTON (AP) Two people have been killed in a Christmas Day argument at a Houston nightclub. Houston police identified the two people killed as Patrick Prince and 30-year-old Brian Washington. The shooting occurred at about 2:15 a.m. yesterday near the Nox dance club in the city's historic Heights neighborhood.
