GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) A teenage gunman is dead and two suburban Dallas police officers wounded following an exchange of gunfire on Christmas Day that began with a traffic stop. The unidentified 16-year-old was shot yesterday afternoon in a volley of gunfire with Grand Prairie police. The officers sustained superficial wounds and were later released from a hospital. The teen from Mansfield, about 30 miles southwest of Dallas, died shortly after being taken into surgery.
CHICAGO (AP) A Texas man is being held on $250,000 bond in Chicago after investigators say he didn't notice his son had been thrown through a car's back window during a wreck on a busy interstate. The Dec. 22 crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway killed the 4-year-old from League City, who died from head trauma. Prosecutors say 46-year-old Franklin L. Jackson didn't notice the boy was missing until he pulled into a gas station to examine the vehicle's damage. The preschooler wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was found on an embankment.
CEDAR HILL, Texas (AP) Police in suburban Dallas say a homeowner has shot and killed an intruder who broke in late Christmas Eve. An attorney for the homeowner says the intruder entered the Cedar Hill home through a bedroom window just before midnight Tuesday. He says the homeowner's deadly actions were justified and "completely protected under Texas law." The intruder was identified as 31-year-old Joshua Slaven, the son of Cedar Hill Mayor Rob Franke.

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) A South Texas sheriff whose territory borders Mexico is in the spotlight as his department is plagued by drug scandals. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino has repeatedly denied being aware of any of the irregularities, including one that involved his son. But Trevino faces re-election in 2016. Nine other lawmen, including Trevino's son, have been convicted on drug charges.
