HOUSTON (AP) A 33-year-old Bexar County man condemned for the slaying of a San Antonio police officer nearly 13 years ago is a step closer to execution after a federal appeals court rejected his appeal. Attorneys for Manuel Garza Junior argued to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that he had deficient legal help at his trial in 2002 for gunning down officer John Riojas. The New Orleans-based court last week rejected the argument.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) BP is appealing a judge's rejection of its argument that claimants who can't trace their losses directly to the company's 2010 Gulf oil spill shouldn't receive payments through a multibillion-dollar settlement with a team of private plaintiffs' lawyers. BP attorneys filed a notice of appeal today, two days after the ruling by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans.

HOUSTON (AP) Authorities say a 27-year-old suburban Houston man hoping to gain national exposure by knocking out an unsuspecting black bystander has been charged with a federal hate crime. Federal prosecutors said today that Conrad Barrett of Katy on November 24th struck a 79-year-old African-American man, breaking his jaw and hospitalizing him for several days.

CLYDE, Texas (AP) A 92-year-old woman suffering from dementia was found dead 100 yards from her Abilene-area home after going out in only a nightgown and house shoes Christmas Day. The Abilene Reporter-News says that a helicopter pilot discovered Ruby Lester's body early this morning in tall weeds near her home in Clyde.
