HOUSTON (AP) A judge has denied bail for a white Houston-area man charged with a federal hate crime for allegedly sucker-punching a 79-year-old black man in a "knockout game"-style attack. U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy said yesterday that she was concerned about 27-year-old Conrad Barrett being free after hearing about the "vicious" crime.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Police say a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head at a North Texas home by a man who told officers he didn't realize the gun he was holding was loaded. Fort Worth police say a group of people had gathered late Thursday evening at a home when the 24-year-old man pulled out the firearm. He shot it once, striking the boy above the eye.

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) A former South Texas sheriff's office commander has pleaded not guilty to marijuana trafficking and money laundering. The Monitor in McAllen reports 53-year-old Jose Padilla pleaded not guilty Friday during a hearing. A federal judge set bond at $100,000 with a $5,000 cash deposit and ordered home detention.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) Authorities say a 28-year-old West Texas man was hospitalized with puncture wounds to his arms and legs after being attacked by five pit bulls while riding his bicycle. Chief Deputy Dale Pearce of the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office tells the San Angelo Standard-Times that the man was attacked Thursday afternoon in the small community of Carlsbad, about 16 miles northwest of San Angelo.
