DALLAS (AP) The Dallas Morning News has named the first responders during the West fertilizer plant explosion as its Texans of the Year. The newspaper announced its choice in an editorial published today. Twelve of the 15 people who died in the April 17th Central Texas explosion were firefighters or others who tried to help put out an initial fire at West Fertilizer Company, where tons of ammonium nitrate detonated in an earth-shattering blast.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) With red and blue lights flashing, several hundred emergency vehicles escorted the body of a Burleson County sheriff's deputy killed while serving a warrant in his hometown. More than 1,000 people attended the funeral service Friday at a College Station church for Sergeant Adam Sowders. Afterward the 31-year-old was laid to rest in his hometown of Somerville.
AMARILLO, Texas (AP) A 22-year-old Amarillo man is jailed after leading police on a highway chase that finally ended when a state trooper fired a shotgun at the fleeing pickup truck. Department of Public Safety Trooper Christopher Ray tells the Globe-News Bradley Wilson St. Clair is in the Randall County Jail on multiple charges, including evading arrest and a second offense of driving while intoxicated.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office says the body of an infant found Monday at a San Antonio recycling center was a boy. But the San Antonio Express-News says the cause and manner of the child's death still aren't available.
