HOUSTON (AP) A family spokesman says former first lady Barbara Bush is "doing great and responding well" to treatment for a respiratory issue. The 88-year-old Bush family matriarch has been in a Houston hospital since Monday.

DALLAS (AP) Police have shot and killed a man at a luxury apartment building in Dallas. They say a lawyer named Michael Schmidt was killed after he opened fire on officers responding to a call about a burglary at the Glass House residences. According to police, Schmidt had told a worker in the building his apartment was being burglarized. That person summoned officers.

HOUSTON (AP) A driver suspected in a fatal hit-and-run near Houston has surrendered to police. Investigators say the man turned himself in Thursday after a witness to the Wednesday night crash picked up a license plate that fell off the truck as it drove away. A woman was killed.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Texas Department of Public Safety has re-opened an Austin driver's license facility damaged in a break-in eight months ago. The state has improved the technology at the North Lamar office so drivers needing a license now can use their computer or smartphone to secure a place in line.
