INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A dangerous mass of arctic air is marching toward the South and East after leaving much of the Midwest miserable with wind chills as low as minus 55. National forecasters say more than 187 million people could be affected by the weather system before it departs by week's end. Texas has seen the worst of the latest arctic blast, with temperatures dropping into the teens for the second night in a row in much of the state. The National Weather Service predicts a slow warming trend today, with temperatures climbing into the 40s statewide.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) San Antonio public works crews have drained the San Antonio River channel to allow cleaning and maintenance of the downtown section of the iconic waterway. Transportation and Capital Improvements department officials say the river was drained before dawn yesterday through downtown. Water was left in the downtown loop lined by the River Walk shops and restaurants. Crews are scheduled to finish their work Friday, and water will return to the channel next Tuesday.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Jury selection has started in the capital murder trial of a 26-year-old former software engineer charged with fatally shooting an Austin police officer in 2012. Hundreds of potential jurors have been filling out questionnaires today. The American Statesman reports the pool will be narrowed and then potential jurors will be questioned individually before a panel is picked to hear the case of Brandon Daniel. The process is likely to take weeks.
KILLEEN, Texas (AP) Police in Central Texas say a man has shot and killed his brother after mistaking him for a burglar attempting to enter his home via a window late at night. Killeen police said today that 32-year-old Terry Lee Moon Junior was found in the back yard of the home early Sunday morning with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he died.
