AUSTIN, Texas (AP) U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is to address a public policy conference sponsored by the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation. Cruz has garnered national attention with fierce rhetoric condemning the Obama administration and the federal health care overhaul. On Thursday, Cruz blasted President Barack Obama for setting up what the president called "Promise Zones" to fight poverty, including one in San Antonio. Cruz said Obama should treat the entire country as a "Promise Zone."

HOUSTON (AP) A white Houston man accused of misleading voters into thinking he was black to help him win election is now accused of not living in the district he was elected to represent. Dave Wilson was narrowly elected to the Houston Community College board of trustees in November. Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan now alleges Wilson is ineligible to serve because he doesn't live in the district that elected him. A court hearing is set for Friday.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) A judge has ordered the forfeiture of a polygamist group's West Texas ranch to the state of Texas. State District Jude Barbara Walther authorized the Schleicher (SHLYE'-kur) County Sheriff's Office to enter the Yearning for Zion Ranch and inventory the property. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints formerly owned the ranch. The Texas Attorney General's Office filed to seize the ranch in 2012, citing numerous sexual assaults of children committed there.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas education authorities say the number of schools falling short of minimum standards and placed on the Public Education Grant list doubled from 2012 because of newer, higher standards. A total of 892 schools were listed in 2013, up from 456 in 2012.
