AUSTIN, Texas (AP) An Austin judge has dismissed the case against a state lawmaker from San Angelo accused of carrying a gun in his carry-on luggage at Austin's airport. The San Angelo Standard-Times reports state District Judge Cliff Brown dropped the case against state Representative Drew Darby at the request of the Travis County district attorney's office. Austin police arrested Darby on November 14th after inspectors found a loaded pistol in his luggage.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Texas Rangers left-hander Derek Holland will miss the start of the season after having surgery Friday on his left knee. The Rangers say Holland injured his knee in a fall on the stairs in his home earlier this week. In statement released by the team, Holland says he's devastated by the injury caused by what he called a "freak accident."
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Federal prosecutors say a former sheriff's deputy in far West Texas has been sentenced to four years in prison for distributing cocaine. Inoe Valdez Junior was sentenced Thursday in Lubbock. The 43-year-old Valdez worked as a deputy for the sheriff's office in Yoakum County.
TEXARKANA, Texas (AP) A former secretary for a Northeast Texas city who stole more than $11,000 in municipal funds must repay the money and serve five years of probation. A Texarkana judge on Thursday afternoon accepted the plea deal from Karen Lightfoot. She served as city secretary of New Boston before being fired in 2012.
