KATY, Texas (AP) School district officials say a zip gun was found and a student was taken into custody at a Houston-area high school that was evacuated and searched by a bomb squad. The Katy school district said on its website that Seven Lakes High School was evacuated Monday after a "perceived threat" was identified. By late afternoon, the district said one device was found, the zip gun, which the district described as "any device altered to propel an object designed to cause harm." . Students will return to class on Tuesday.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Officials say a North Texas man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend. Thirty-nine-year-old Larry Fikes pleaded guilty Monday to murder in the slaying of Angela Bynum in January 2013. The plea came as he was set to go to trial this week. Fikes must serve 20 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after stabbing a man to death with a sword outside of an Austin pawn shop. Thirty-seven-year-old Thomas Brock was sentenced in the May 2012 slaying of 57-year-old Luis Hernandez Vigil. Brock pleaded guilty to murder last week.
HOUSTON (AP) Two men have been arrested after gunfire earlier this month outside a Houston home killed a man attending a birthday party. Houston police announced murder charges against 20-year-old Arlin Barrientos and 18-year-old Randy Larios. Both were being held without bond in the January 4th slaying of 24-year-old Wayland Clark of Houston.
