SAN ANTONIO (AP) San Antonio police have arrested a woman believed to be the mother of a newborn boy found dead at a recycling center. Police on Tuesday night arrested 25-year-old Nidia Yolibeth Alvarado on a capital murder charge. A medical examiner has ruled that the infant found dead on Dec. 23 in a duffel bag was strangled.

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) A Southeast Texas hunting and fishing guide has been sentenced to three years of probation for illegally transporting an alligator carcass. Forty-nine-year-old Steve Barclay of Kennard (keh-NAHRD') last August pleaded guilty to transporting wildlife taken in violation of federal law. Investigators say Barclay in May 2008 witnessed a client shoot and kill three alligators, which are listed as a threatened species. Officials say Barclay transported one of the to a taxidermy shop in Grapeland.

LONGVIEW, Texas (AP) The mayor of an East Texas town for the past 32 years has decided it's time for a change. The Carthage City Commission will meet Friday morning to fill the unexpired term of 85-year-old Mayor Carson Joines, whose term expires in May. Joines has spent 42 years in office the first 10 as Carthage mayor pro tem and the other 32 as mayor.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) Susser Holdings Corp. has announced it anticipates fourth-quarter merchandise sales at stores open at least a year rose about 2.4 percent. The Corpus Christi-based company, which sells gasoline and merchandise at convenience stores, says it expects a 3 percent increase in the figure for the full year.
