DALLAS (AP) A Texas grandfather's initiative to allow hotel guests to dial 911 without having to press 9 first has received attention from a federal official who's asking the nation's major hotel chains for more information. Hank Hunt's 9-year-old granddaughter was unable to call for help while her mother was stabbed to death. The story has spurred Federal Communications Commission member Ajit Pai to send letters to 10 major American hotel chains about 911 dialing.
LA VILLA, Texas (AP) The school district in a small South Texas town will meet to decide whether to accept a city rate offer that would turn the water back on and reopen the district's schools. The La Villa school board will meet Thursday evening to consider options offered by the La Villa City Commission. The city cut water to the district after students left for holiday vacation, saying the district owes about $58,000 on its water bill.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) State forestry officials say there's been a surge in reported timber thefts in East Texas woodlands. The Texas A&M Forest Service says more than 20 timber theft cases have been reported from the Red River in the Ark-La-Tex to almost the Gulf coast of Southeast Texas.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame is set to induct new members, including championship team roper Walt Woodard. The ceremony is set for Thursday evening at Fort Worth's Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum honors excellence in competition, business and support of rodeo and the western lifestyle. Also Thursday, former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jay Novacek will be given an award celebrating the uniqueness of Texans.
