AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Some school superintendents in the Austin area say they're sorry for making a bad call about the icy weather. Officials in Round Rock, Leander and Lake Travis decided before dawn to keep schools open and some kids were already on buses when teachers and principals reported they couldn't get in because roads were bad. Officials then called off classes for the day.
AMARILLO, Texas (AP) A contractor has fired 11 security guards at the Pantex plant near Amarillo, claiming they staged an illegal "sickout" last week. The guards' union denies accusations that guards called in sick to avoid a scheduled drill and says it will take the case to the National Labor Relations Board. Pantex is the nation's only plant where nuclear weapons are assembled and dismantled.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Travis County is holding a special Texas House election. North Austin voters are deciding between Democrat Celia Israel and Republican Mike VanDeWalle. The winner replaces Mark Strama, who resigned his seat to work for Google.
