BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) The latest winter storm to bedevil Texas motorists have exited to the east, but not without tying up traffic one last morning in Southeast Texas. Freezing drizzle on Southeast Texas bridges prompted the closing of bridges between Port Arthur and Houston, Orange, Sabine Pass and Louisiana. Also closed were U.S. 69-287 from Beaumont to Port Arthur, Texas 73 around Port Arthur and Interstate 10 through Beaumont. Schools in the Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange area are closed and classes cancelled for Wednesday.
ABILENE, Texas (AP) A jury is to hear opening statements in the child-injury trial of a West Texas woman in the death of her 22-month-old daughter. The Taylor County jury will hear Wednesday from attorneys for both sides in the case against Tiffany Klapheke (klah-PEEK'). She's charged with injury to a child in the August 2012 death of Tamryn Klapheke, who died of malnutrition and dehydration. The 23-year-old Abilene woman says her Air Force airman husband's deployment overseas left her too stressed to care for their three children, including the infant daughter.
DALLAS (AP) Recently deceased Texas billionaire Harold Simmons' wife wants his will sealed by a Dallas court. Attorneys for Annette Simmons are expected to argue Wednesday before a Dallas County probate judge to have the will's contents blocked from public view. Simmons was an East Texas native who rose from poverty to head a sprawling corporate empire with interests ranging from energy to nuclear waste dumps.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The Texas State Board of Education holds a last round of discussions before finalizing the state's new high school graduation requirements. Before its final vote Friday, the board meets Wednesday in Austin is to weigh how requirements for speech and foreign language courses should factor into the new graduation standards. The Legislature voted overwhelmingly last summer to overhaul academic curriculum.
