SLIDELL, Texas (AP) Leaders of the First Baptist Church of Slidell (sly-DEL') have a message of forgiveness for thieves who stole about $40,000 worth of property: "To Those Who Robbed Us, We Forgive You." Pastor Bobby Cates last Friday found his church office ransacked and a laptop computer, other electronics and a sound system missing. A church van was stolen, but later recovered. Slidell is a small North Texas town of about 175 people, located 50 miles north of Fort Worth. says he believes there are desperate people everywhere.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A Central Texas jury is to hear opening statements in the capital murder trial of a 26-year-old former software engineer charged with fatally shooting an Austin police officer in 2012. The Travis County jury will hear statements Tuesday in Austin in the trial of Brandon Daniel. He could get the death penalty if convicted of the slaying of Officer Jaime Padron.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texans can begin casting ballots Tuesday for the Texas Democratic and Republican primaries. Secretary of State Nandita Berry says voters can cast early ballots in the March 4 primaries through Feb. 28. The deadline to request a ballot by mail is Friday. Photo identification is required to cast a ballot in person.

LAREDO, Texas (AP) A South Texas border crossing will be getting an upgrade. Federal and local officials on Tuesday are scheduled to announce funding and plans for improvements to the Laredo Port of Entry. Officials will detail plans to expand and modernize the nation's 5th largest port of entry.
