AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A lawyer for an ex-software engineer on trial in the 2012 slaying of a Texas police officer has acknowledged to jurors that his client had taken the anti-anxiety drug Xanax the night of the shooting. In opening statements today, Russell Hunt Jr. said 26-year-old Brandon Daniel was depressed following a breakup. Daniel could get the death penalty if convicted of capital murder in the fatal shooting of Austin officer Jaime Padron (HEYE'-may pah-DRONE').

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) The death-penalty case against a North Texas man accused of killing former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and another man remains on track for a May trial. State District Judge Jason Cashon heard more than 40 motions today in the case of Eddie Ray Routh, charged with capital murder for the deaths of Kyle and Chad Littlefield at a shooting range.

HOUSTON (AP) An illegal beer run at a Houston convenience store has police seeking two suspects who crashed a car into the business and only took an 18-pack of brew. Police say nobody was hurt in the smash-and-grab crime early today in the Clear Lake area that was captured on store security video.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Thieves have stolen nearly $55,000 worth of new computers from a storage area at the University of Texas in Austin. UT spokeswoman Cindy Posey on Tuesday said nobody has been arrested. Posey declined further comment on the investigation into last week's theft. Campus police report dozens of Apple MacBook Pro devices were stolen.
