WASHINGTON (AP) Two of the three surviving war veterans receiving the Medal of Honor next month live in the San Antonio area. President Barack Obama will award the medal to 24 Army veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. All but three will be decorated posthumously.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) An El Paso man faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine after being charged with shining a laser on a helicopter in flight. Don Ray Dorsett was arrested yesterday. No one was injured in the Jan. 4 incident. But the federal government has been cracking down on pointing lasers because of the potential danger to flight crews, passengers and people on the ground.

PLANO, Texas (AP) A Plano man wants to withdraw his guilty plea to a charge of trying to blow up a natural gas pipeline in a Dallas suburb. A hearing Wednesday is scheduled for Anson Chi in a federal court in Plano. Prosecutors and defense attorneys had agreed that Chi would be sentenced to the maximum 22 years in prison.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Two salamander species unique to Central Texas are getting new protections from the federal government. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced endangered species status for the Georgetown salamander and the Salado (suh-LAY'-doh) salamander due to habitat degradation where they live.
