SAN ANTONIO (AP) Former Sergeant Santiago Erevia clearly remembers the day in Vietnam in 1969 when he and the wounded soldiers he was caring for came under heavy fire. That day he single-handedly destroyed four enemy bunkers and killed their occupants. The 68-year-old retired postal worker from San Antonio is one of 24 veterans from three wars to receive the U.S. military's highest honor this weekend.
KATY, Texas (AP) Harris County authorities are investigating an after-school brawl that left one high school student hospitalized with a gunshot wound. Officials tell the Houston Chronicle dozens of students were involved in the melee Friday after classes at Cypress Lakes High School. No suspects were in custody as of Saturday night.
BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) A Beaumont police officer has escaped serious injury after he was dragged briefly while unsuccessfully trying to prevent a woman from driving off in a patrol car. Authorities say officers had responded to a domestic disturbance call Friday afternoon when a 21-year-old woman put her hand through a partially open window of a patrol car at the scene, unlocked the door and took off before she was taken into custody.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) The University of Texas at El Paso is now a tobacco-free campus. Assistant vice president for environment health and safety Robert Moss tells the El Paso Times the policy has been under consideration for years and now is a reality after approval by the University of Texas System.
