AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A former Austin software engineer has been sentenced to death for the murder of a police officer. A Travis County jury deliberated more than eight hours yesterday before condemning Brandon Daniel in the April 6, 2012, death of Officer Jaime Padron (HEYE'-may pah-DRONE'). Padron was shot to death while answering a disturbance and shoplifting call at a Wal-Mart.

WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats running for House and Senate in Texas are getting a boost next month from the current resident of the White House. President Barack Obama is expected to travel to Houston in April to raise money. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California are scheduled to attend.

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) An apparent collision with a bird has forced an American Airlines flight to return to the Dallas airport. The Federal Aviation Administration says American Airlines Flight 1188 landed safely last night after its crew reported the bird strike. The MD-80 jet was flying from DFW to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The simulation involves a devastating tornado outbreak. American Red Cross chapters across Texas are joining forced today to see how they can best respond. Hundreds of disaster assessment volunteers will mobilize to assess the types of residential damage caused by the mock tornado outbreak. Red Cross officials will then mobilize emergency services.
