LONGVIEW, Texas (AP) An East Texas city has paid $16,250 to end contract negotiations with controversial rocker Ted Nugent, who was under consideration as the headliner for Longview's Fourth of July celebration. The Longview News-Journal reports the city's payoff came after Nugent's earlier controversial comments about President Barack Obama became an issue during a campaign swing with Texas gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott.

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) A Galveston County jury has awarded more than $550,000 in back pay and damages to a former county employee who was sexually harassed by his then constable boss. The Galveston County Daily News reported that a jury returned a unanimous verdict Friday in favor of former Deputy Constable James Gist who said that former Constable Pam Matranga forced herself on him in 2011. The county will pay him the back pay, damages and about $97,000 in attorney's fees.

HOUSTON (AP) One person has been discovered dead following a fire at a vacant house in Houston. The Houston Fire Department says the fire was reported early yesterday. Authorities say the body was located in the living room. Further details were not immediately released Saturday.

HOUSTON (AP) Houston police have arrested the driver of fleeing car that hit a horse and rider in an accident that led to the injured animal being euthanized. Police say the 17-year-old rider suffered minor injuries in Friday night's crash but the 12-year-old horse named Blackjack had to be put down.
