TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) Limited ferry service has resumed between Galveston and Bolivar (BAH'-lee-vur) Peninsula after a weekend oil spill closed the Houston Ship Channel. Officials yesterday began daylight-only ferry service. The oil spill happened Saturday afternoon following a collision between a barge and a ship just inside the mouth to Galveston Bay.
CONROE, Texas (AP) A clerk at a Houston-area convenience store has been fatally shot during a robbery. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says nobody has been arrested following the slaying last night at a store in Conroe. Investigators say other customers were in the store when the clerk was held up at gunpoint and shot.
DALLAS (AP) A federal official says tens of thousands of hotels don't allow guests to directly reach emergency services when dialing 911 from their room phones. Federal Communications Commission member Ajit Pai says the "vast majority" of America's estimated 53,000 hotel properties are run by franchise owners. Only about 45 percent of those have direct 911 dialing.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas lawmakers are taking testimony on what changes may be necessary for the state's juvenile justice system. The Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee will meet in the afternoon to study how the juvenile detention system is operating. Lawmakers recently moved to shut down most of the state's juvenile detention centers.
