AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Governor Rick Perry says a monument unveiled on the Texas Capitol grounds is an ongoing testament to the country's appreciation for the sacrifices of Vietnam War veterans. Perry spoke Saturday near the Vietnam Veterans Monument for a gathering marking the 41st anniversary of the last U.S. troops leaving South Vietnam.

HOUSTON (AP) A family court judge in the Houston area heavily criticized for dismissing hundreds of cases without notifying the parties involved has decided not to seek re-election. The Houston Chronicle reports Judge Denise Pratt on Friday announced her intention to end her campaign, saying "relentless attacks by my political opponents" have proven damaging to her family and court proceedings. She was elected in 2010.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) Authorities in South Texas say six people have been arrested for their roles in a human smuggling operation after 72 undocumented immigrants were found at a home earlier this week. The Brownsville Herald reports a criminal complaint charges Raul Ramirez-Martinez and five others with harboring the people at a Brownsville home.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) A former Air Force basic training instructor has been sentenced to eight months in prison for abusive behavior toward recruits that included threatening to castrate one and not letting others eat. The San Antonio Express-News reports Staff Sergeant Annamarie Ellis was sentenced Friday by a military judge following a weeklong trial.
