AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Governor Rick Perry is making a second trip to New York. The Republican leaves today for a three-day visit featuring meetings with business leaders and a reception sponsored by the public-private partnership funding his trip. Perry has led similar job-poaching tours to many states with Democratic governors.
DALLAS (AP) Dallas police say a man was fatally shot after pointing a gun at officers during a standoff following a car chase. Police say Michael Mayo led officers on a 30 minute chase through south Dallas before ending up in a mall parking lot. Police say Mayo got out of his vehicle and pointed a gun at his head. Mayo then went back in his vehicle but later got out and pointed his gun at officers.
DALLAS (AP) The U.S. Chemical Safety Board will present the findings of its investigation into the deadly West fertilizer plant blast and its recommendations at a meeting today. Not a single state or federal law has been passed geared toward improving safety conditions at such facilities. Texas fertilizer producers can still store hazardous chemicals in flammable wooden containers.
DALLAS (AP) A Dallas man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for helping lead a marijuana trafficking ring. Sylvespa Adams said he conspired with others to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana. Authorities say that the drug operation sent couriers to Arizona to pick up marijuana and transport it back to Dallas in checked suitcases on commercial airlines.
