DALLAS (AP) The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says veterans "don't want a handout, they want a handshake and a chance." General Martin Dempsey addressed a military symposium yesterday in Dallas. Former Reform Party presidential candidate and business H. Ross Perot introduced Dempsey at the event co-sponsored by the America's Future Series and the Association of the U.S. Army.

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) A Midland firefighter has died from gunshot wounds in what police say was an apparent murder-suicide involving a five-hour armed standoff. A city spokeswoman says police and firefighters found 35-year-old firefighter Henry Rodriguez the Third mortally wounded at a Midland house about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) A flamboyant figure in Texas politics has proposed that the state harvest its runaway wild hog population as a way to boost revenues instead of outsourcing the job to companies. Humorist Kinky Friedman faces insurance agent Jim Hogan in a Democratic runoff vote for agriculture commissioner May 27th. The San Antonio Express-News says Friedman wants the state should broaden the program and take a profit. Hogan opposes the idea.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk has signaled his company's intent to put its much-sought launch pad project on a beach near Brownsville. The signs came in final comments Musk gave at news conference last week in Washington. He said SpaceX will probably have its Boca Chica Beach launch facility near the Mexican border active "in a couple of years."
